| NEWS:
Happy New Year and here's wishing successful herding in 2012 to all members of
the Antelope Valley Stockdog Club!
This is just a reminder that membership dues for 2012 and due next week, so
please take a moment right now to fill out your renewal form if you haven't
already done so and get it in the mail quickly. I've attached a downloadable
form for you convenience, so feel free to make copies to give to your herding
friends. Remember, your membership is the life's blood of this club and we
depend on you and your input for the coming year.
Speaking of the coming year, please be sure to let me know how many of you and
your guests will come out and have fun with us on January 54, 2012. I believe
I've purchased enough food for all, but would really appreciate a head count
in case I need to buy more. I've already received a few reservations, but I
know there are a lot more of you who are planning to attend. You can either
let me know when you send in your membership renewal, or email me directly at LeCajunCowboy@aol.com
and use the heading "Fun Day".
There is an added feature to the Fun Day activities. Yes, we're already let
you know about a lot of stuff, but those of you who are interested will have
the opportunity to work in the stock pens. Mike Burks will supervise that
activity and if you've never done this before it will be an awesome experience
for you and your dog. Most dogs seem to enjoy it and it provides handlers the
challenge of thinking things through. Again, we ask that you limit your time
to ten minutes so other herders will have the same opportunity.
Our slate of Officers for 2012 will be voted upon immediately after lunch at
the annual meeting. Our current Officers were pressed into service last
January at the reformation of the club and we are attempting to make it even
better. In an effort to make the club more versatile, current Board Members
Mike Burks, Terry Kenney, Colleen Smeed and I have asked EveLynn McGinnes to
fill the position of Secretary pending voter approval. EveLynn not only brings
years of herding experience and knowledge to the Board but she also represents
yet another herding breed
I will also give a brief report of the Club activities for 2011 as
well as a financial report. And, believe it or not, it's actually good
news!
But it all begins with you sending in your membership renewal. So
please, do it now while it's still on your mind. We don't do PayPal
yet, but that's something we may look into down the line. For now,
just write your check to AVSC and get it in the mail asap. We need
your support and participation to make this the best club possible. We
have some very talented people in the club and can put those talents
to good use. A perfect example of that is Kathy Roberts. Because of
her line of work, I asked her to come up with a new club logo that was
fun and not so breed specific. She did a terrific job and when you
look at the AVSC logo now you've just got to smile.
So thank all of you for making 2011 a very good year for our club. Now
let's make 2012 even better.
Joe Williams
President, AVSC
Lots of exciting things to talk about for the upcoming AVSC Fun Day in
January, 2012 to be held at TASK Farms in Leona
Valley. Be sure to read all the way to the end so you don't miss
anything
DATE CHANGE: Due to scheduling conflicts, the date of the Fun Day
has been changed to Saturday, January 21, 2012. It's the best we could
come up with. Besides, I have it on good authority that this will be a
beautiful day for herding!
START TIME: The fun begins at 8:30 AM and is open to all members
of the Antelope
Valley Stockdog Club and their guests. Members who are current
with their 2012 dues get special benefits such as enjoying the day with
their first dog free and only $10.00 for the day for each of their
additional dogs. Guests will be charged $20.00 per dog OR (and here's
where it gets interesting) you can join the club upon arrival for only
$25.00 single membership and receive the member benefits (which include
a free lunch for the event).
STOCK/ARENAS: Goats will be available in both the 100' X 100' and
the 100' X 200' arenas. Sheep will be available in both the 125' X 235'
and the 170' X 240' arenas. And, with certain stipulations, the field
course will also be available. As always, we ask that you be courteous
to the stock and your fellow herders. Limit your runs to 10 minutes and
then you can get back on the list again or change arenas.
LUCHN/MEETING: Lunch will be free to AVSC members and will
consist of smoked turkey and ham. Anyone wishing to bring a side dish is
encouraged to do so. We do recommend that you provide your own
beverages. Guests wishing to dine with us will be charged $10.00 unless,
of course, you've become a club member earlier in the day. Please email
me (LeCajunCowboy@aol.com)
with how many in your party will attend lunch so we will be prepared to
feed everyone. There will also be a general meeting of the club to elect
officers for 2012. This is required by AKC in order for us to keep our
sanctions.
TRAINER BENEFITS: Several of your new and prospective members are
highly qualified trainers. This fun day presents a rare opportunity for
you to bring your students on a field trip and afford them the
opportunity to work at a different venue. The member/guest information
above would apply.
SPECIAL EVENTS: The two main arenas will be set up with different
courses. One arena will feature a "teamwork" competition in
which two handler/dog combinations will have to work as a team to
accomplish specific tasks. One handler and dog will work one aspect of
the course before trading off the next element to the other handler and
dog. No handler/dog team may attempt back-to-back elements except when
required by the course. Teams will be chosen at random but every attempt
will be made to pair an experienced handler/dog with a less experienced
handler/dog. The challenge here will be communication and planning. This
will be an outstanding opportunity for trainers to school their students
in some of the finer points of the sport and for lesser experienced
handlers and dogs to learn "hands on". This course will have
all the excitement of a trial .... but with NONE of the
pressure.
The other main arena will be set up with different elements you might
find if you were doing real ranch work. Practice any or all of them.
This arena will come into play after lunch because that's where we'll
hold a spirited TIME/FAULT Trial for a CASH
prize!!! Only the top handlers and dogs will be allowed to compete in
this event and entries are limited to the first ten names drawn from the
hat. Only one entry per person. Entry fee for
this event will be $10.00 each with $2.50 of the entry going to TASK
Farms for stock rental and the remaining going to the winner. So someone
will win $75.00! In the event of a tie there will be a run-off to
determine the winner.
MEMBER BENEFITS: All members in good standing
are entitled to a $5.00 discount on all entry fees for AVSC sponsored
trials held at TASK Farms during 2012. If you compete with more than one
dog, this could really add up during a weekend trial. It is your
responsibility to remember the discount and inform the Trial Secretary
when you submit your entries.

Please download the fill out the attached Membership Application/Renewal
form and submit to the address shown. And feel free to cross-post to
your herding friends. Remember, this is an all-breed club and all breeds
are encouraged to participate.
It's going to be a fun filled day so I hope to see you there on
Saturday, January 21, 2012. Together we can make this a memorable event.
Joe Williams, President
Antelope Valley Stockdog Club
Fellow AVSC Members,
You guys ROCK! That's about all I can come up with to try to say
"Thank
You"
to those of you who participated in and helped stage the trial this past
weekend. I was so proud to see AVSC club members not only volunteer for certain
jobs, but step up and do other jobs as they popped up. It is understandable that
not all club members could be at the event, but those of you that did
compensated for it beautifully. New or veteran members, I makes me proud to be
associated with this group. I hope you give yourselves a well deserved round of
applause. You helped make my job so much easier and I thank you for that.
Now, get some rest ........ because there's more to come in the future!!!!
Joe
Just a quick note to all of you that the entry forms for our AVSC AKC trial
are now available at www.Jan.McAninch.Net/
for you to download. The trial is only three weeks away so please get your
entries in as soon as possible. We are offering A Course cattle, A Course
sheep and B Course sheep as well as HT and PT tests using goats. Our judge
for Saturday, October 15 will be Larry Favreau and Sunday's judge will be
Rich Godfrey. Remember, each judge is limited to fifty runs per day and it
takes thirty-five runs per day to meet all the trial expenses, so in
addition to your own entries please encourage a friend to participate. Also,
Sally and Mike are working on a 50-50 drawing so you stand a chance of
getting some of your money back.
Our trial will usher in the Fall and Winter herding season so let's show up
in force to make it a great time for all. If you are a club member and don't
have a dog ready to compete, come out anyway and give us a hand with timing,
scribing, etc. We only have two volunteers so far and both of them are
running dogs as well, so any and all help is needed. If you want to help,
email me directly at LeCajunCowboy@aol.com
and I'll find something for you to do!
Joe
We're only about a month and a half away from our fall AVSC herding trial to
be held at TASK Farms in Leona Valley so be sure to mark your calendars for
October 15 & 16. This trial will offer B Course sheep, A course sheep and
A course cattle. Larry Favreau will judge Saturday's trial while Rich Godfrey
will judge on Sunday. AKC rules state that each judge is allowed to judge up
to fifty runs per day so we would really like to fill that quota. If we get
more than fifty trial runs, alternate judges can and will handle the overflow
in the HT and PT classes. Remember, it takes a minimum of thirty-five runs for
the club to break even, so the best way to fill the trial is not only for you
to enter, but talk to your friends that are not members of AVSC but do belong
to other clubs and encourage them to enter as well. I know we support other
clubs, so ask them to support ours as well. Besides that, it's
always fun to compete with friends.
As you know, it takes more than one or two people to put on a successful
trial. Therefore, I ask your help in volunteering for the various positions.
We need scribes and timers (perhaps the best way to learn about what judges
are looking for), as well as runners, stock handlers, gate keepers, etc. Mike
and Sally are heading up the 50-50 drawing but may need help in selling
tickets at the event. This is my first try at being Trial Chairman so I am
open to suggestions ...... and need lots of help. You can email me directly at
LeCajunCowboy@aol.com
Also mark you calendars for October 22 for a very special herding clinic at
TASK Farms to be conducted by Craig Watson, internationally respected
judge, trainer, breeder and clinician. The clinic, limited to twelve
participants, will be on cattle and sheep. Entry is on a
first-come-first-served basis and several spots were filled the day the clinic
was announced. Entry fee is $150 per dog and includes lunch. Spectators are
welcomed and encouraged. Spectator fee, including lunch, is $30. On an even
more limited basis will be private lessons at $65 per dog on Sunday, October
23. Contact Terry Kenney for all the details.
And don't forget the Silver Buckle Series at TASK Farms will begin on Friday,
October 14. Check out Jan McAninch's website at www.jan.mcaninch.net
for details and entry forms when available.
And if you haven't done it yet, check out our own website at http://antelopevalleystockdog.com to
see photos from the recent fun day.
Here's hoping we all have a fun time during the upcoming herding season.
The Antelope Valley Stockdog Club gained thirteen new members as a result of
the
"Fun Day" held at Top C Ranch/TASK Farms in Leona Valley Saturday, August 13th. Before the day got too warm new and veteran club members were able to work their dogs at will utilizing all four arenas plus the round pen and the ten acre open field.
Just a quick reminder that there are many herding opportunities coming up soon at AVSDC's new location at TASK FARMS. I know that many of you are busy with USBCHA events, but if you are also looking for Titles or Championship Points in AKC, AHBA or ASCA, now is a great time to go for it. Joe Williams Pres. AVSD
